Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) — Sacred Observance Guide

Appointed Time: יום הכפורים (Yom HaKippurim) • Scheduled Observance: Month 7, Day 10 (observed sunset Monday September 21 to sunset Tuesday September 22, 2026)

The most sacred day of the biblical year—a 24-hour fast of soul-humbling, repentance, and awe for the once-for-all atonement through Yeshua our High Priest.

The Biblical Meaning & Covenant Purpose

Yom Kippur is designated in Torah as a Sabbath of Complete Rest (Shabbat Shabbaton) on the tenth day of the seventh month. It is the only biblical feast commanded as a fast, where all souls must “afflict themselves” (Leviticus 16:29, 23:27-32) by abstaining from food, drink, and physical comforts from sunset to sunset. In the earthly sanctuary, the High Priest entered behind the veil into the Holy of Holies only once a year, bearing sacrificial blood to atone for his own sins, the priesthood, and the sins of all Israel, cleansing the sanctuary of uncleanness. The scapegoat (Azazel) symbolically carried the confessed transgressions away into the wilderness. In the New Covenant, the Book of Hebrews reveals the sublime fulfillment: Yeshua, our sinless Melchizedekian High Priest, entered the heavenly sanctuary not with the blood of bulls and goats, but with His own precious blood, securing eternal redemption (Hebrews 9:11-14, 10:19-22). Believers observe Yom Kippur not in terror of condemnation, but in deep reverence, sorrow for sin, and immense gratitude for the cleansing blood of Messiah.

How to Celebrate & Observe

1. **Complete 24-Hour Fast:** Abstain from all food and water from sunset to sunset. Exceptions apply for urgent medical fragility. 2. **Complete Cessation from Labor:** No work of any kind is permitted; treat the day with greater sanctity than an ordinary weekly Sabbath. 3. **Humbling the Soul (Teshuvah):** Dedicate the hours of the day to heartfelt confession of sin, deep personal prayer, tearful repentance, and seeking forgiveness. 4. **Meditating on Hebrews & Leviticus:** Read Leviticus 16 and Hebrews 9-10 as an assembly, contemplating the cost of redemption and the supremacy of Yeshua’s priesthood. 5. **Embodying the True Fast of Isaiah 58:** Yahuah declares that the fast He chooses is to loose the bonds of wickedness, undo heavy burdens, let the oppressed go free, and feed the hungry. Commit to active, practical benevolence and reconciliation. 6. **Breaking the Fast with Joy:** Gather at Friday sunset as the fast concludes, breaking bread together with nourishing soups, bread, and mutual joy in the Father’s mercy.

The Biblical Scriptures

Leviticus 23:27-32 — Statute Forever for the Day of Atonement

“”Also the tenth day of this seventh month shall be the Day of Atonement. It shall be a holy convocation for you; you shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire to Yahuah. And you shall do no work on that same day, for it is the Day of Atonement, to make atonement for you before Yahuah your Elohim. For any person who is not afflicted in soul on that same day shall be cut off from his people. And any person who does any work on that same day, that person I will destroy from among his people. You shall do no manner of work; it shall be a statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwellings. It shall be to you a sabbath of solemn rest, and you shall afflict your souls; on the ninth day of the month at evening, from evening to evening, you shall celebrate your sabbath.””

Leviticus 16:30, 34 — Cleansed from All Sins

“For on that day the priest shall make atonement for you, to cleanse you, that you may be clean from all your sins before Yahuah… This shall be an everlasting statute for you, to make atonement for the children of Israel, for all their sins, once a year.”

Isaiah 58:6-9 — The Fast Chosen by Yahuah

“”Is this not the fast that I have chosen: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out; when you see the naked, that you cover him, and not hide yourself from your own flesh? Then your light shall break forth like the morning, your healing shall spring forth speedily, and your righteousness shall go before you; the glory of Yahuah shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and Yahuah will answer; you shall cry, and He will say, ‘Here I am.’””

Hebrews 9:11-14 — Yeshua Our Heavenly High Priest

“But Messiah came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation. Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption. For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Messiah, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to Elohim, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living Elohim?”

Romans 5:8-11 — Reconciled to Elohim Through Messiah

“But Elohim demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Messiah died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to Elohim through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. And not only that, but we also rejoice in Elohim through our Lord Yeshua the Messiah, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.”
